Role

The Yield is about to launch their services in the USA and then other countries in the coming years. We are currently looking for a Systems Architect to take ownership of our systems architecture for Data Science and Engineering, and to help us take a successful product to a global scale.

The role will enable The Yield to grow into the US market as well as helping to improve the team’s overall design capability and skills, and capabilities of our software engineers. This is a significant role and pivotal to The Yield’s success.

This role will take primary responsibility for architectural design of systems for software and data science, for supervising the technical aspects of the transformation projects and to be a key reviewer of software design, acting as a technical mentor to the software team.

This is one of the most exciting programs of work with large scope covering advanced cloud software, web and mobile applications and highly specialised data science applied to agtech – one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the world right now.

Responsibilities

1.   Architecture & Design

• Devising and documenting the architecture of systems and overseeing technical design of systems in a collegiate and collaborative environment
• Liaising with the CTO, Software, Devops, Data Science and Product to understand needs, formulate solutions and ensure they are properly engineered
• Evaluating new technologies, prototyping solutions
• Understanding operational costs of system designs and ensuring cost efficient solutions are being developed and deployed
• Follow and contribute towards engineering and design guidelines for developing highly scalable, available and fault tolerant systems
• Devise, document and extend data models to support business needs. You will be a champion for the data model and will have to be able to communicate it to the team
• Championing creation of reusable design patterns, documenting them and making sure they are reused by the software team

• Working with the team to ensure software is developed and deployed to meet the architecture
• Using technical review and mentoring to grow team capability
• Contributing to a cohesive, diverse, and high-performing team that is genuinely inclusive and gender-balanced

3. Communication

• Effectively communicating architecture to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Working effectively and collaboratively with partners such as Databricks, Microsoft and various others

4. Planning

• Working with peers and stakeholders to plan projects.
• Being able to develop high-level estimates to the business.

Skills

To be successful in this role you will have:

• 7+ years’ experience as a systems architect in small to medium company environments building globally scalable and high performance systems
• Extensive Cloud experience in any cloud, preferably with Azure specific experience
• Solid experience with data systems including data stores/lakes, Databricks, NoSQL(CosmosDB, Dynamo DB), Datawarehouse tools, assorted SQL databases
• Experience with IoT systems and geospatial data will be very well regarded
• Data Modelling experience – being able to understand the business and devise and maintain a data model to support business needs
• Proven ability to provide documented architecture and to support a software and devops team in development and maintenance of the system
• Experience in supporting the needs of Data Scientists
• Experience in complex, large-team technical environments where issues require prompt resolution and strategic actions
• Ability to prototype solutions to prove concepts and / or value
• Understanding of cloud costs and being able to ensure systems architected are cost effective and scale efficiently
• Ability to work collaboratively in a high functioning, multi-disciplinary team
• Ability to mentor and support software engineers in their career growth through review and direct mentorship
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Skills that will be highly desired but not essential:

• Commercial consulting experience
• Supporting a Data Science team with highly scalable production models in place

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you are likely to have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
